Enlosure Systems:  WallsRoof System »

One of the greatest benefits of timberframes structures is the ability to use a wide variety of material to create a wall system. Materials such as foam core panels, straw bales, and SMART Timberframe's wall system blend themselves very well with timberframing.

Most timberframe builders use Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to enclose their structures. These panels are very energy efficient (R24 - R26), but they also have multiple downfalls such as:
• Running electrical wires is very time consuming therefore more expensive.
• Since "SIPS" come in standard sizes and do not correspond to your door and window layout, a large amount of material is wasted during the installation process.
• SIPs are composed of foam sandwiched between Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and have a very limited number of studs, which results in a more labor-intensive process when exterior siding and finishing trim is installed.

At SMART Timberframes, we have developed a wall system that is;

1. More energy efficient than foam core panels
    (R29.5)
2. More cost effective (up to 50% cheaper
    than SIPs)
3. More accommodating for mechanical and
    electrical components.

We use a 2x6 stud wall construction (2' O.C.) sheathed with low emission Oriented Strand Board. Once the walls are constructed, the exterior is enclosed with a 2" shiplap EPS insulation by Plastifab (R8) and covered with a membrane that increases air and water resistance. Our wall panels are pre-built in our shop and installed in a matter of days. The inside wall is then insulated with Roxul Flexibatt (R21.5) and sealed with a 6mm vapor barrier.
